The boys and I got to go upstairs for the first time yesterday. The space up there is great - it will be a bonus room, small open office space for the computer, and the boys' big bedroom with a full bathroom for them. The plans were drawn to have two identical dormers with 3 windows like the one on the left framed side by side.
The dormer in the boys' room in done according to plan. Here is Kyle in front of his bedroom window.

BUT (you knew that was coming...) the dormer in the bonus room is only framed for 2 windows. Here is Walton trying to figure out why with the framers. He isn't getting very far, and the boss isn't around today. Hmmm.

Here's a different shot of the dormer that's smaller than it should be:

So now, the big debate is whether we should just leave it as is, or have them tear it out and redo it according to the plan. We have been talking in circles and have not come to a conclusion yet. Does it really make a big difference - yes, because it should have been done right to start with and no because it's just a small window. But if we leave it the dormers won't "match" from the back of the house and I'm not crazy about that. I would like them to look balanced. Walton has talked to Mike, the owner of the framing company and he is supposed to meet him out there sometime today to figure out what happened and what they're going to do about it. It would be best to make a decision today - the roofers are putting the felt on today and will start shingling on Tuesday. It's not such a big deal for them to have to pull up some tar paper and redo it later, but it's way more of a hassle to have to pull off shingles and redo a whole section of the roof. And the basic structure won't be as sound if they tear it off and try to tie the "fixed" version of the dormer into the existing structure. I have a feeling it's going to have to stay the way it is.
A few more pictures - the tar paper starting to go on the roof deck (which makes Walton very happy because it will help keep the afternoon rain off of the subfloor.)

These are the stairs up to the boys' room/bonus room. It gives me the creeps to walk up them because they are open and you can see straight through to the basement. (It's best to not look down!):

And the very muddy, dirty stairs to the basement (which you access through the garage):

The back of the house with the boys' dormer.

And the boys playing stickball with some scrap lumber and wadded up tin foil from the framer's lunch trash they found on the ground. Gotta love those boys! They will find a way to have some fun no matter what!
