rainy day
No footers today. We had a much needed rainstorm instead. The guy who will dig the footers and pour the basement walls is estimating that it will be dry enough for him to start working on Wednesday.

some piles of dirt and a big rock
Terry finished moving the dirt for the basement to the point where the guys that are doing the foundation can come in to dig the footers on Monday. He suggested that we angle the house slightly because he found a "mammoth" layer of rock as he was digging where the front corner of the house was supposed to sit. We will take his advice rather than bringing in the dynamite.

It was nice to drive down the lane on gravel instead of rough clay & tree roots tonight.

At last...progress we can see!
After 4 months of jumping through a variety of hoops to obtain the necessary permits, we now have tangible evidence of all of the work we have done to get to this point. Here is Walton posting the final permit in the box at the entrance to our driveway. Who knew that a piece of paper and some push pins could make us so happy? Hooray!

Mr. Terry Echols began digging the basement of our new home today. The boys and I stopped by the building site mid-afternoon to see how things looked. They were thrilled when Terry offered them each a ride on his front-end loader as he moved the red Georgia clay.

Terry has been prompt and conscientious with his work. (He also cleared the driveway for us.) What a great way to start this project - we hope that all of our subcontractors will be as reliable as he is...
Tomorrow he will continue digging the basement. A company called "Sound Foundations" will begin working on the footers and the poured walls for the basement next week.
